Filming Across Glasgow and the Scottish Landscape: How We Choose a Location

We are a Glasgow based film production company that spends as much time in the mountains as we do in the city. Over the years, we have filmed environmental stories in the Highlands, community projects on the islands and endurance events deep in the mountains. That range means we think about location differently. It is never about the prettiest backdrop. It is about where a story actually lives.

Here is how we approach the places we film and what we have learned shooting across Scotland.

The city and our own doorstep

We are based in Anderston, so the Clyde waterfront and the working, regenerated edges of Glasgow are where a lot of our commercial and brand work happens. This is the backdrop for films that need to feel human and grounded rather than glossy.

Glasgow gives you honest texture. Old industrial interiors, real streets and real people. For the kind of narrative-led films we make, that beats a polished studio nearly every time.

Where our environmental work takes us

A lot of what we do lives out in the landscape. Our environmental and documentary work has taken us into the Highlands, out to the west coast and onto the islands, filming the places and the people working to protect them.

Remote does not mean difficult if you plan for it properly. We build travel, weather and access into every outdoor shoot so a day is never lost to logistics. That planning is the difference between coming home with the shots and coming home with excuses.

This is also why the environment matters to us beyond the camera. We are a 1% for the Planet member, and we film a lot of the wild places we are trying to help protect.

Filming in the mountains

Some of our most demanding work is event and endurance filming in the mountains, following runners and stories across terrain most crews would not attempt. It takes fitness, the right lightweight kit and a real understanding of the hills.

That is a genuine specialism, and not many production companies can do it. If a film needs to be made somewhere hard to reach, that is exactly where we are most at home.

How we actually choose a location

The location has to serve the story first. A quiet room can carry a personal documentary better than any sweeping vista. A working site can say more about an organisation than a staged one.

Before we lock anything in, we ask what the film needs to feel like, how the place sounds as well as how it looks and what the light does through the day. Wind and traffic ruin more shots than bad weather ever does.

We also handle the practical side so clients do not have to. Permissions, access and timing all get sorted before a crew turns up.
